There are many things to love in this 5 book series. However, I have to admit I was completely worn out after reading 5 books in a row about the same family. Almost every conceivable problem managed to make it's way into the books....adultery, murder, drowning, unmarried mothers, HIV, the 9-11 tragedies, unrequited love, infertility, terminal cancer....they were all in there. The reader barely gets through one crises before the next one appears. The family's interactions were sometimes glorious, sometimes not, but still gave a sense of unity and deep love for each other that was based on their Christian upbringing and faith. That was the main redeeming aspect to the stories, which otherwise were somewhat repetitive and became rather predictable. I found myself skimming paragraphs of superfluous writing in the final book, just trying to get to the end and be done with it. Then I was a bit miffed to find there was a dangling story line that never was resolved, leading the reader to the NEXT series of FIVE books to continue the story. No thank you. This author repeatedly writes books in series, a pet peeve of mine. I won't let myself be lured into the next series of the Baxter family saga. I was going to review each book separately, but this is not so much a 5 book series as it is one VERY long book of overlapping stories, which is left with an unfinished story at the end.This is my first Karen Kingsbury book (series). This one is co-authored by Gary Smalley so it may not have been the best choice for a first book by Karen Kingsbury for me. I say this because Gary is a counselor and I read fiction more for pleasure. I do really appreciate an undercurrent of faith; that’s why Julie Lessman has got to be my current favorite author – because she does such a good job of combining faith and passion. I do look forward to reading more of Karen’s books because I have a feeling that the books that she’s authored by herself may do just that. In this book however, ‘the message’ being conveyed to the reader was so important to the authors that they didn’t want it to be missed and it was spelled out repeatedly…to the point that I found myself skimming, rather than reading, many of the paragraphs.I liked the characters and the stories. It did get a bit repetitive – repetitive thoughts and feelings – and I’m guessing that’s because of it being a study, not just a fictional book. It covers just about every situation a person could face and how a Christian might get through it. And also frequently addressed believers who stray and return. The thoughts and feelings are what you’d expect to experience in the given situations… and the outcomes as well. Sometimes God answers our prayers the way we want and other times, we need to accept His way/plan.
